Bouzouki - Introduction

The Greek bouzouki is probably one of the most famous folk instruments all over the world. Many people have listened, at least once, to its sharp and staccato sound in the famous tune of Zorba the Greek, composed by Mikis Theodorakis for the homonymous film.

The bouzouki has been the king of Greek popular music, the expression of deep “kahimos”, of the “duende” of the Greek soul. And at the same time, the joy of its heart as expressed in the Greek feasts (glendia) and their passionate, almost ecstatic, dance.

This beautiful instrument, in all its facets, constitutes a part of the history of Greece. It is the only instrument which has only very few – mainly in the external appearance – differences from the ancient pandura (link).
